You've planned your holiday for months.

The excitement builds as the departure date gets closer. After a long flight, you finally arrive. The scenery is beautiful, your family is ready to explore, but all you want to do is sleep.

Instead of enjoying your first day, you're wide awake at 3am, struggling to concentrate, and wondering why your body hasn't caught up with your destination.

For many travellers, jet lag steals the very first day of their holiday.

What Is Jet Lag?

Jet lag happens when your body's internal clock is out of sync with the local time after travelling across multiple time zones.

Until your body adjusts, you may experience a range of physical and mental symptoms, including:

  • Extreme tiredness and fatigue

  • Difficulty falling asleep or waking too early

  • Brain fog and poor concentration

  • Dizziness or a heavy feeling in the head

  • Irritability

  • Digestive discomfort, bloating or gas

  • Feeling generally "out of sync"

Not everyone experiences jet lag in the same way, which is why an individual approach is important.

General Care

Before considering homeopathic remedies, don't forget the basics.

Long flights often leave the body dehydrated, making jet lag feel even worse.

Simple measures that can help include:

  • Drink plenty of water before, during and after your flight.

  • Limit alcohol and excessive caffeine.

  • Get up and move regularly during long-haul flights.

  • Spend time outdoors in natural daylight after arriving.

  • Try to follow the local sleeping and meal times as soon as possible.

  • Give your body time to adjust—most people improve gradually over a few days.

Homeopathic Therapeutics

One of the most common questions is:

"What's the remedy for jet lag?"

A better question is:

"What symptoms is this person experiencing?"

Homeopathy treats the individual rather than the condition, so the remedy should always match the person's unique symptom picture.

Arnica montana

Often considered before flying, especially for people who regularly experience jet lag or feel bruised, sore and exhausted after long journeys.

Cocculus

One of the best-known remedies for exhaustion caused by loss of sleep.

It may be considered when weakness, dizziness and a heavy feeling in the head are the main complaints.

Nux vomica

May be suitable when the traveller is irritable, oversensitive to noise and light, mentally exhausted, and struggling to sleep after airport stress, late nights or rich food.

Carbo vegetabilis

May help when the person feels completely drained after a long flight, especially when bloating, gas and digestive discomfort are prominent.

Combination Remedies

Some travellers prefer a combination remedy to support adjustment during and after flying.

Narayani remedies – Jet Lag Combo

Contains:

  • Arnica

  • Coca

  • Cocculus

  • Aranearum Tela

  • Melatonin

  • Pineal Gland

  • Vitamin B12

Designed to support the body's adjustment to long-distance travel and changes in time zones.

Helios - Jet Lag

Contains:

  • Arnica

  • Electricitas

  • Red Brom

A convenient travel combination traditionally used to support comfort during and after flying.

A Therapeutic Perspective

Jet lag is a reminder that good prescribing is about more than naming a condition.

Two people may both have "jet lag," but one cannot sleep, another is dizzy, another has digestive upset, while someone else simply feels completely exhausted.

Understanding what the person is experiencing—and identifying what needs attention first—is at the heart of good therapeutic prescribing.

This article is for educational purposes only. Homeopathic prescribing should always be individualised according to the person's symptoms and overall state.
