One of the most profound roots of hypertension is the “water-fluid conflict.” This conflict emerges when life feels overwhelming, as if one is “drowning in pressure.” It is triggered by the fear of losing everything – home, job, financial stability, or even one’s sense of safety. In such states, the body interprets the situation as life-threatening. The kidney parenchyma, which governs water balance, is directly involved, with the midbrain serving as the relay. To adapt, the kidneys hold onto sodium and water, thereby expanding blood volume and pushing blood pressure higher. This reaction is a primitive survival programme: when one feels everything is slipping away, the body conserves resources, clinging tightly to every drop.

Kidneys retain sodium and water → blood volume increases → blood pressure rises.

A remedy that mirrors this pattern is Serum Anguillae. On the physical plane, it shows its affinity to the kidney and circulatory system where long-standing hypertension damages renal tissue. Rubrics such as:

  • GENERALS - HYPERTENSION - dialysis; from: (3)

  • KIDNEYS - HYPERTENSIVE, renal sclerosis: (4)

point to its role in patients whose high blood pressure has already burdened the kidneys to the point of structural decline, with sclerosis or even dialysis as outcomes.

  • GENERALS - HYPERTENSION - dialysis; from: (3)

  • KIDNEYS - HYPERTENSIVE, renal sclerosis: (4)

Yet the mental and emotional portrait reveals the deeper source of this water-fluid conflict. Patients often experience their problems as insurmountable, as though caught in a rising flood they cannot escape. Their nervous system is on edge, displaying painful hypersensitivity to noise and odours, every small stimulus acting like another wave crashing in:

  • MIND - ODORS agg.; strong: (2)

  • MIND - NOISE - agg.: (9)

  • MIND - ODORS agg.; strong: (2)

  • MIND - NOISE - agg.: (9)

The inner fear of “losing everything” leads to a compensatory pattern of clinging and saving. Nothing can be let go, whether possessions, emotions, or even physical fluid. This psychological retention mirrors the kidney’s physiological retention of water and sodium. It is echoed in rubrics like:

  • MIND - BULIMIA: (162)

  • MIND - BULIMIA: (162)

It is not just bulimia, but also a symbol of excessive intake and possession of life’s resources. At the same time, there is a constant inner sense of being “overwhelmed by pressure,” which creates a strong craving for peace and quiet, and even a tendency to rush through tasks. This urge to “deal with things quickly” is essentially a defensive posture: they hurry to cope and act fast because, at a subconscious level, they feel that time is running out.

  • MIND - PEACE - desire for: (7)

  • MIND - INDUSTRIOUS - dispatches things quickly: (2)

Even in dreams, the unconscious continues this theme. Images of natural disasters – storms, floods, rising waters – emerge, symbolising the emotional weight and pressure that drives the hypertensive state.

  • MIND - PEACE - desire for: (7)

  • MIND - INDUSTRIOUS - dispatches things quickly: (2)

In Serum Anguillae, we see the complete picture of the water-fluid conflict: the body clings to water to survive, the vessels strain under the increased volume, and the mind clings to safety, possessions, and control in the face of overwhelming fear. The result is a deeply interconnected state where hypertension and emotional drowning mirror one another.

Serum Anguillae
